Roofline Surface Prep for Permanent Lighting in Troy

Permanent lighting track only holds as well as the surface under it. Before we mount a single channel, we clean and inspect the fascia, trim or gutter face, so adhesive and fasteners bite into sound material instead of grime, chalky paint or soft wood.

Why surface prep comes before permanent lighting

On our jobs, surface prep means readying the exact strip of your home exterior where the lighting track will sit. It is part of every permanent lighting installation we do, not a separate service. Road dust, pollen film, oxidized aluminum and flaking paint all keep a track from seating flat, and a track that rocks or gaps lets water collect behind it.

Plenty of older houses around Troy carry painted wood fascia with many layers of paint over trim that has been through decades of freeze and thaw. We check that wood before we commit to a mounting line, because a fastener in soft wood works loose after one winter. Our crew is licensed and insured, and our 5 years in business have taught us what each kind of roofline needs before the lights go on.

What our surface prep includes

Cleaning the mounting line
We wipe down the strip where the track will run with a cleaner suited to the material, then let it dry fully. Aluminum gutter faces and vinyl trim hold a thin film of dust and pollen that weakens adhesive contact.
Chalk and oxidation test
Aging aluminum and painted finishes develop a powdery chalk layer. We rub-test it with a glove, and where it comes off, we clean back to a firm surface so the track grips the finish, not loose dust.
Probing wood fascia
We press-test painted wood fascia and rake boards for softness, especially at corners and downspout drops where water sits. Soft spots are photographed and shown to you before anything is mounted.
Brick and masonry anchor points
On brick or stone, we brush loose mortar dust and white efflorescence off each anchor point so masonry fasteners seat in solid material.
Cleanup on the ground
Used cloths, cut track ends, old clips and packaging leave with us. Beds and walkways are left as we found them.

Signs your roofline needs prep before lights go up

  • Powder on your fingers

Run a finger along the gutter face. If it comes away white or gray, the finish is oxidizing, and adhesive would grip that chalk instead of the metal.

  • Peeling or blistered paint

Loose paint on fascia can lift away with a mounted track. We scrape the loose edge along the mounting line, or tell you plainly if the board should be painted first.

  • Dark streaks under the drip edge

Streaks usually mean water runs down the fascia face. That is where we look hardest for soft wood.

  • Old clips and hook holes

Years of seasonal lights leave rusted clips, nail holes and sticky residue. We remove what is left and space our fasteners so they land in fresh material.

  • Gutters pulling away

A gutter that sags or gaps at the fascia will not hold a straight light line. We point it out before install day so you can have it fixed first.

What affects the cost of prep and install

Surface prep is built into your permanent lighting quote, so you see one figure for the whole job. What moves that figure is mostly the house itself. We start your free quote by phone and confirm it once we have seen the roofline.

Linear feet of roofline

More feet means more track, more lights and more surface to clean and test.

Height and access

Two- and three-story houses, steep pitches and tight side yards take more ladder setup and more time on each run.

Surface condition

Clean, sound aluminum goes quickly. Heavy chalking, old clip residue or wood that needs a different mounting approach adds labor.

Mounting material

Brick, stone and stucco need masonry anchors and more drilling than gutter faces or vinyl trim.

Power and zones

Distance to the nearest exterior outlet and the number of separately controlled zones change the wiring time.

How prep fits into install day

  1. 1

    Walk the roofline together

We look at every run, mark where the track will go and note the material on each section. You see the layout before anything touches the house.

  2. 2

    Clean and test

We clean the mounting strip, let it dry, then test the finish and the wood. Anything that would weaken the hold is photographed and explained.

  3. 3

    Mount and wire

Track goes onto the prepared surface with fasteners matched to the material. The lights snap in, connect to the controller and power, and we set up the app-controlled system on your phone.

  4. 4

    Final check and cleanup

We run test patterns, check each connector at the corners and pack out every scrap.

Surface prep questions

Do you clean my whole house before installing lights?

No. We clean only the narrow strip where the track mounts, plus any masonry anchor points. It is prep for a solid install and nothing more. If your siding needs other work, it is best done before we arrive.

What happens if you find rotted fascia?

We stop that run and show you photos. We will not mount track to soft wood, because it will pull loose as the wood swells and shrinks. Once the board is replaced, we come back and finish the section.

Will the track damage my paint or gutters?

On a sound surface, the track sits flat and fasteners go in at measured spacing. If the system is ever removed, small fastener holes remain, and we show you where they will be before you decide.

Can you prep and install in winter?

Only on dry days warm enough for the adhesive to cure, since cold or damp surfaces keep it from gripping properly. Troy winters limit those days, so many homeowners schedule in fall or spring.

Whose lights do you install?

We are an authorized Gemstone Lights installer, and our crew handles both the surface prep and the install. That way the person who tested your fascia is the person who mounts the track on it.
